Historical Archaeologist. The successful candidate will coordinate the
technical and logistical aspects of research, fieldwork, data collection and
analysis, and technical report preparation within project-specific research
objectives. Assigned projects primarily consist of locations with documented
historic period archaeological resources in a variety of urban, suburban,
and rural settings. Project responsibilities range from conducting archival
research, photo-documentation, and survey mapping/recordation to the
development of detailed historical contexts and research designs in support
of all phases of archaeological investigation.
The Historical Archaeologist reports to the project’s Senior Archaeologist
and, on specific projects, to the assigned Project Manager. The Historical
Archaeologist provides support to Senior Staff on a variety of projects, but
also works independently on designated projects. General responsibilities
will include:
• Working within the regulatory standards and guidelines of cultural
resources management and preservation planning
• Ensuring adherence to and quality control of project-specific
excavation methods, recording, data collection, and handling of
archaeological materials
• On-site management of field excavation and personnel through
supervision and participation
• Conducting project-appropriate, thorough, accurate, and
well-documented research
• Completion of a variety of finished, professional work products
(technical reports, management memoranda, proposals) with appropriate
content and detail on time and within budget
The successful applicant will have a demonstrated work history of
archaeological supervisory experience and will possess several key
requirements including:
• Graduate degree in anthropology (with a concentration on historical
archaeology strongly preferred)
• At least one year of cultural resource management (CRM) work
experience and/or demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the laws
and regulations relating to CRM
• Extensive supervisory and research experience on historic period sites
in the northeastern United States, with some of the work being in urban
and industrial settings
• Detailed and demonstrated knowledge of seventeenth- through
nineteenth-century cultural material of the northeastern United States
• Experience in the use of GPS technology and its relationship to
GIS/CAD mapping requirements.
• Pro-active and problem-solving approach to research and field issues
• Excellent organizational, writing, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage several projects concurrently within time and budget
constraints
• Experience with relational database applications, preferably in
networked Windows environment
• Ability to travel.

immediate opening for a highly experienced Architectural Historian (AH) in
the field of cultural resources management. This is a key position within
PAL’s Historic Preservation Team (HPT) and offers the successful applicant
an outstanding opportunity to work on some of the most exciting
architectural history projects in New England.
The AH is primarily responsible for completing the technical efforts in the
areas of resource identification, evaluation, documentation, and reporting
that ensure the successful outcome of a PAL project. Specific duties include
archival research, architectural field survey, data entry, technical writing
of various work product types, coordination of report production,
supervision of Architectural Assistants, and certain administrative tasks.
The AH works closely with PAL senior staff, and takes on additional project
responsibilities as experience and circumstances allow.
PAL’s project types include, but are not limited to, historic property
surveys, National Register of Historic Places eligibility evaluations and
nominations, written and photographic archival documentation, historic
property tax credit applications, and Section 106 of the National Historic
Preservation Act consultation. The AH must work effectively in both
independent and team settings and have excellent decision-making,
organization, presentation, and communication skills. The work requires
independent and creative thinking within the framework of project scopes, as
well as strict attention to detail and the ability to work as part of a team
in a careful and efficient manner that consistently produces accurate, high
quality work products within established budgets and schedules.
Qualified applicants will have a graduate degree in historic preservation,
history, art history, or a related field and two to five years of employment
experience in the field of cultural resource management. Successful
applicants will also possess demonstrated experience in conducting historic
architectural survey, research, and historic documentation projects, and an
ability to communicate results in technical reports. Proficiency in
Microsoft Office products and the use of both 35 mm SLR film and digital
cameras is required.
