Transportation Projects

PAL has a long and highly regarded involvement with transportation agencies and projects, having conducted over 250 projects covering all aspects of cultural resource investigations:

  • reconnaissance/inventory surveys of archaeological sites and historic buildings, structures, landscapes, and districts;
  • archaeological site examinations and historic resources evaluations to determine significance
  • determination of effects, preparation of Section 106 and Section 4(f) documentation, development of memoranda of agreement;
  • data recovery programs and construction monitoring
  • historic archival and photographic documentation;
  • historic bridge architectural salvage and rehabilitation recommendations;
  • interpretive programs, displays, and publications

These services have been conducted as planning elements for highways, roads, airports, subways, rail corridors, bridges, bike paths, and navigational aids (lighthouses).

PAL’s surveys have been conducted in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including NEPA, Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation act of 1966, as amended, Section 4(f) of the Department of Transportation Act of 1966; and state and local regulations. Under the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) alternative means of transportation such as bicycle paths are being explored. PAL has conducted surveys for numerous bicycle paths funded through ISTEA throughout New England.
