Survey and Planning Projects
PAL has extensive experience in completing cultural resource survey and planning projects for a variety of clients, including federal, state, and local agencies and corporations. These projects are designed to provide information to property managers and planners about the location, condition, and significance of historic properties and offer recommendations about their subsequent treatment within the context of the organization’s overall planning process.
PAL’s community-wide surveys of historic architectural resources include the recording of resources in the rural inland town of Rochester, Massachusetts, and over 1,000 properties in Plymouth, the largest town in Massachusetts. Completed state inventory forms, National Register of Historic Places evaluations, and a final report containing a historic context narrative and planning recommendations provide clients and review agencies with solid information for decision-making. PAL has also prepared town-wide archaeological reconnaissance surveys for towns including Dartmouth and Marion, Massachusetts. The surveys identified known and potential prehistoric and historic period archaeological sites, developed townwide prehistoric and historic archaeological sensitivity maps and accompanying guides, developed management recommendations for the protection of cultural resources and sensitive areas, and presented the information in a format that would be useful to state and local planning and review agencies.
PAL has completed more than 150 large and small cultural resource survey projects, encompassing thousands of buildings, structures, objects, landscapes, and sites. We have also prepared numerous stand-alone historic preservation plans and cultural resource elements for community-based comprehensive plans.
