U.S. Military Academy Housing
PAL completed National Register documentation for nearly all of the historic family housing units located at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, New York.
The work was conducted in advance of the proposed leasing agreement with a private real estate concern to take over management of the housing under the U.S. Army’s Residential Communities Initiative (RCI).
Process
PAL completed survey and National Register evaluation of 391 housing units built from 1813 to 1960.
A National Register Multiple Property format cover document was prepared that defines the historic context for the development of historic housing at the USMA, delineates the different property types identified, and provides a list of the registration requirements for listing districts and individual buildings in the National Register.
PAL completed National Register documentation for 14 historic districts and 10 individual properties that were evaluated as eligible for the National Register.
Results
The documentation was used to consult with the New York State Historic Preservation Officer regarding the proposed transfer in accordance with Section 106 of the NHPA.
A contract for transfer was awarded to a private management firm in 2008 and successfully completed in July of that year.
